The Sustainable Communities North East Initiative (SCNEI) has created this toolkit. It is a valuable partnership set up to secure a more sustainable future for the North East’s communities. It is independent and region-wide, and involves a range of partners drawn from across sectors.
The vision of the SCNEI is:
“To help create sustainable communities across North East England in order to improve people’s quality of life and help secure our future.”
Through the Brighter Futures Together toolkit, the SCNEI seeks to inspire and support communities to do their bit in creating a more sustainable future where they live, now and for future generations.
Sustainable Communities as places where people want to live and work, now and in the future. They meet the diverse needs of existing and future residents, are sensitive to their environment, and contribute to a high quality of life. They are safe and inclusive, well planned, built and run, and offer equality of opportunity and good services for all.
Put simply they are nice places to live that also limit the future harm we do to our planet. You can find out more about what a sustainability community looks like by downloading an information resource from the Directory.
At its most fundamental level, achieving sustainable communities is a means of delivering sustainable development for individual places, balancing and integrating the country’s environmental, social and economic goals, and placing people at the heart of the agenda.
A common definition of sustainable development is:
“Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”
Here in the North East, the SCNEI believes that it is about “working together to achieve the best possible quality of life for the people of the North East”.
There are so many simple things we can all do to live a more sustainable life. If we make our communities more sustainable, we will ultimately benefit. These simple actions can save us money, strengthen our local areas, and help move us towards happier and more pleasant neighbourhoods. By working towards the creation of a sustainable community, any group or individual can help to create a community that is:
We can all help the North East towards a vibrant economy, a healthy and happy community, and a protected and enhanced environment for all of us, for present and future generations to enjoy.
The toolkit has been designed in partnership with community groups, for community groups and individuals to use. It has been created by expert organisations, both local and national.
Every factsheet provides practical information on different kinds of sustainable actions. You can find out where to go for further help, advice, funding opportunities. There is also a collection of good existing projects, so that we can all learn from one another. Collectively the factsheets will help us to improve our communities throughout the North East of England, helping the region to lead the way on sustainability.
The Brighter Futures Together toolkit was originally developed by the County Durham Local Agenda 21 Partnership, to help create sustainable communities across County Durham. It is now available across the whole of the North East, supported by the SCNEI.
