Why Get Involved

Living on One Planet

Our consumption patterns have increased over time, and pressure is being placed on our natural resources and our environmental systems. Here in the UK, we’re using far too much of our earth’s natural resources – the equivalent of three planets. We need to reduce our impact and live within the limits of our planet while leaving space for wild places and wildlife. We need to change the way we live to tackle climate change, save our forests and protect our oceans.

We need to change the way we live so that we are using the resources of one planet, and not three.

Thinking differently

Living sustainable lifestyles is often seen as giving things up. But really it’s about doing things better and thinking differently.

Practical solutions

It is often difficult to see how one person’s actions can make a difference in the face of global environmental problems – but they do. If everyone plays their part, the results will be really impressive. For example, in the UK, energy use in our homes is 27% of carbon dioxide emissions entering the atmosphere and domestic transport accounts for 25% of carbon dioxide.

Imagine if we all took the following steps:

  • Turned down the thermostat by 1 degree;
  • Used energy efficient light bulbs; and
  • Insulated our homes.

These simple actions could make a significant cut in the energy we use in our homes. Furthermore if we tried to:

  • Use our car less;
  • Take public transport more often;
  • Take holidays without flying; and
  • Cycle and walk more;

We could have a significant cut in our emissions from transport. Imagine what we can all achieve together in our communities if we all took these simple steps.

We need to make a significant move toward more sustainable lifestyles. We need to do this now, and we need to do this together.

How to Get Involved

It is not always easy to find out where and how to start, or who can help. The Brighter Futures Together toolkit is a practical first step for you and your group to make a difference. The information has been provided by experts, so you can get support from people who really understand.

The best thing you can do to get involved is use the toolkit as much as possible. Try it out. Then let us know what you’re up to.

Help us to reach as many people as possible. Tell your friends, neighbours, anyone who you think might be interested.

If you are in touch with network organisations, involving lots of different community representatives, we would love to talk to you about reaching your members. Please contact us.

We can all be part of the solution. Make a start today and create a brighter future for us all.

How to use the Toolkit

The Brighter Futures Together toolkit covers many different subjects and activities – for social, economic and environmental benefit. It covers the 8 themes associated to creating sustainable communities. Each factsheet gives step-by-step advice, as well as where to go for further help. There are also factsheets with general guidance on project planning, fundraising, volunteers, and publicity and communication.

Each community faces its own particular issues, so you can select the factsheets most relevant to you.
