| Summary |
| The New Herrington doorstep green and Home Zone project was developed to create a doorstep green and Home Zone (a residential street, or group of streets, designed for the community and not for motorised transport such as cars or motorcycles) on approximately two hectares of neglected green space in the centre of New Herrington, Sunderland. |

| Outline |
The Square Route Group formed in 2001 as a group of residents who wanted to take action to improve and reverse the environmental decline of the former pit village of New Herrington.
The work involved the reclamation of approximately two hectares of neglected green space, which had been used as a dumping ground for burnt out cars and a route for joyriders and motorcyclists, leaving the green area unsafe for children to play. The green is now full of wildlife with benches and paths for the community to use and enjoy. A Home Zone inspired roadway (which was designed for community use) was also installed – resolving issues of unpassable and potholed unadopted roads with little to no street lighting. Community events were held in order to involve the local residents with the plans, and also to provide social events, sporting and art activities and training for local people to participate in.
